The barrowfield at Różanówka, distr. Nowa Sól, was identified in the 1930s, its chronology determined thanks to research carried out by O. Kleeman as BA III. In 2006 the site came under rescue excavation in response to cases of grave robbery, commissioned mostly by local collectors, this activity encouraged by the cemetery’s location deep in the woods. The barrowfield has a total area of 5 ha. Of 54 raised features 23 are identifiable barrows, 15 more are likely barrows (Fig. 1). The tumuli mostly have a diameter of between 8 and 14 m, and a height of not more than 50-60 cm. Only three exceptional barrows have a diameter of over 20 m and a height of more than 1 metre. On its north side the barrowfield is bounded by a low raised linear feature, within which in 2006 heavily damaged graves were discovered dated to BA IV/V – V. Similarly dated flat graves were identified in northern higher-lying area of the cemetery, between groups of barrows and the raised linear feature. During seasons 2007 and 2008 excavation was made of two barrows (nos. 12 and 11) found in the western area of the cemetery. Their mound is of earth only, without any inner structures, but with a well discernible layer of the original humus. Both tumuli had next to them a faintly legible ring ditch. Two bronze bracelets discovered in the ring ditch of barrow 12 were deposited presumably at the time of building the tumulus. Unfortunately, the central burials in both barrows had been robbed, the surviving fragments of pottery dated to BA III (Fig. 2). Also discovered within the mounds were concentrations of pottery fragments originating from individual vessels, dating from the same period; a few flat graves identified outside the mound were also dated to BA III (Fig. 3). The next phase of occupation of the cemetery at Różanówka is associated with the opening stages of the Przeworsk Culture. Several Przeworsk Culture cist graves were identified, dug into the mounds of the two investigated Lusatian barrows, others were discovered between the these tumuli. The most striking grave, discovered in 2007, was furnished with a ritually bent iron sword, a scabbard, and a spearhead, driven at an angle into the remains of the cremation pyre. The grave pit was at the base of barrow 12. A grave discovered on top of the mound had among its furnishings stone polishers, a hand-stone, a strainer-like dish and a spindlewhorl. The grave goods in the rest of the graves consisted of intentionally broken pottery vessels and iron fibulae of Middle La Tène construction. Overall, seven features of Przeworsk Culture have been identified so far. Fieldwork in the cemetery at Różanówka is to be continued.
