Mutual insurance society is a specific business entity, occurring only in insurance. On Polish soil, the first forms of insurance activity occurred already at the beginning of the fifteenth century. Further development of mutual insurance took place in Poland in the seventeenth century, as well as during the annexation at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In the years between World Wars the dominant role in Poland was played by legal-public mutual insurance societies, particularly the General Mutual Insurance Society and Mutual Insurance Society in Poznan. With the outbreak of World War II, the two insurance companies were taken over by the German authorities, and after regaining independence by Poland, continued its activities. In the history of the Polish insurance business, insurance societies operating on the basis of reciprocity disappeared in 1952. Only the Law of 28 July 1990 on the organization of insurance business has changed the Polish insurance market and restored the capacity to operate as a mutual insurance society.
