The architecture of Polish-Ukrainian and Ukrainian-Polish paralel Corpus of Ivan Franko’s self translations

Ivan Franko (1856-1916) is a famous Ukrainian poet, writer, dramatist, translator, historian, ethnographer, publicist, social and literary critic, journalist, economist and political activist. He is the most prominent figure in Ukrainian culture after Taras Shevchenko. His heritage envelopes above 6 000 items, it takes above 100 volumes. Among them there are above 1 000 in Polish with above 40 creative works including in particular two novels: (Lelum i Polelum / Лель и Полель, 1887) and For the Hearth ( Dla ogniska domowego, Для домашнего огнища, 1892). Many of this Polish works Ivan Franko translated into Ukrainian and vice-versa: he made self-translations from Ukrainian into Polish. Using computer technologies the parallel corpus of Franko’s self-translations was created. In the article, the sources of Polish language competence of Ivan Franko are shown, the state of linguistic research of his creative works in Polish together with the Ukrainian self-translations is described. The essentiality of parallel corpus and its advantages for Franko’s self translations are explicated. The list of Franko’s parallel corpus. The practical application of this corpus as well its research potential in different fields of science is displayed.
