This paper proposes an analysis of selected texts from the borderline of literature and visual arts (intermediality) entitled “Das Gedächtnis der Bilder – Texte zu Malerei und Fotografie” by the Swiss writer Klaus Merz. In the first part of the paper, the concept of visual metaphor and essayistic ekphrasis, which is a special form of artistic expression bordering on word and image, is discussed. In the second part of the article, selected texts from the borderline of word and image were analyzed and the extent to which they meet the formal conditions of visual metaphor and essayistic ekphrasis is analyzed.
