This article is an analysis of the mythopoetic image of Ariadne in five poems by Valery Briusov. TheGreek myth ofAriadnecombinestwo phenomena: love and loneliness. InthepoemsanalyzedtheRussianSymbolistBriusovfocuseshisattentionononestoryfromtheancientmythofTheseus and Ariadne, Theseus’ abandonment of Ariadne on the island of Naxos.Briusov interpretsthe story through his Symbolist worldview. Heshowsthatlonelinessintheworldisnotaninherentpartofbeing; it is the result of a choice, and is connected with a loss (in the case of men) or with abandonment (in the case of women). PoemsaboutthemythiccoupleillustratethethesisthatintheworksandworldviewoftheolderSymbolistslove does not exclude loneliness, because earthly love is merely a fleeting moment that does not guarantee constant union with another person.
