Previous studies indicate, that one of the main barriers in the process of internationalization of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is the lack of appropriate knowledge. Knowledge, in the context of the internationalization, can be analysed at various levels, including considering different types of knowledge (e.g. internationalization knowledge, market knowledge), and various sources of knowledge acquisition. The academic literature indicates the fundamental importance of knowledge and experience of the owner/manager in the internationalization of small businesses. Based on a review of literature and previous empirical research the paper presents different approaches to the investigation of knowledge in the context of the internationalization of SMEs.
