Since the times of "perestroika" Polish people of the Brest region have started the reorganization of the social life in different directions. Aspirations to the identity and culture usually began from a religious revival.The oldest Polish nongovernmental organizations in the Brest region were Polish Social School in Baranovichi (March 1987), Polish Club in Brest (November 1987), Polish Social School in Brest (September 1988). Brest department of the Union of Poles, the most powerful Polish organization of the Brest region, was established in 1990 as the Romuald Traugutt's Polish Cultural Educational Association of the city of Brest and Brest region. In March 1992 the Association was reestablished into the Brest Department of the Union of Poles in Belarus. In 2005 the Union of Poles was deprived of legal rights by the Belarusian government and nowadays it exists under the conditions of so-called "unacknowledged organization".In 1995 the Department of Polish Maternal School in Brest "Polesie" began to work. The Polish Social Scientific Union was established in 1998. The Polish Sport Club "Pogoń" appeared in Brest in 2003. The Consulate of Poland in Brest plays an essential and active role in the development of Polish culture and in the coordination of the Polish organizations in the Brest region.The main directions of activity of the Polish organizations in the Brest region in 1987-2008 were: organizational work, educational work, cultural-educational work, public and social work for the Polish organizations in the Brest region, educational work with children and young people, scientific-didactic work, scientific-popularizational work, researching work, work under the evidence of Polish people destinies in the Brest region, active part in taking care of historical monuments, and establishing work.
