Isaac Abrahamides, using the predicate Hrochotius, was one of the leading figures of the Reformation in Upper Hungary at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. A large manuscript collection of his sermons has been preserved from the period 1600-1601, when Abrahamides was an evangelical preacher in Zvolen. The main language of the sermons is Slovakized Czech, accompanied by frequent passages in Latin. In addition, Germanisms and Hungarisms are also present in the Czech text. The language is also supplemented by glosses in Greek and Hebrew. The study notes the context in which the different languages were used and focuses on the rhetorical practices of the preacher. It compares the role of developed literary languages with the living vernacular that facilitated understanding for sermon audiences.
