The core of the study lies in reflections on differences in development of the historical novel in “Western” and Central European literatures. The author investigates the question whether it could actually be effective to make use of interpretative methodologies developed for Western postmodern aesthetics (L. Hutcheon, A. Elias, P. Waugh) to analyse Central European novels of the last twenty-five years. He analyses four historical novels by Vladimír Macura published in a single volume under the title Ten, který bude, interprets them as historiographic metafictions, metahistorical romances and postmodern dialogical works, and demonstrates the advantages of using these categories. He concludes that at the turn of the century historical novels − regardless of their geo-cultural origin − become united again as they share the topic of the past’s inaccessibility and the (meta)historical interpretation of reality.
