The article is dedicated to the interpretation of cultural codes within the framework of the intersemiotic translation of the novel by Romain Gary Promise at Dawn into cinematic language. As research material, we used the novel Promise at Dawn (1960) and the film by Éric Barbier (2017) bearing the same name. As a theory basis for the article, we use the division of translation into intralinguistic, interlinguistic and intersemiotic, proposed by Roman Jakobson. The specificity of intersemiotic translation is determined by the presence of several interpretative levels, which inevitably involves a dialogue with the source text. The focus of the article is on the methods of recoding cultural meanings and the opportunities the semiotic system of film language provides. Special attention is given to the transformation of the verbal into non-verbal and the role of the artistic details in creating the perception of the world within the framework of the movie.
