This study is devoted to the problem of translating the texts, which contain cultural information coded explicitly and implicitly. The subject matter of the analysis is Polish version of Russian detective story Before the end of the world written by Boris Akunin and translated by E. Rojewska-Olejarczuk. Different groups of lexems were analysed, e.g. anthroponyms, toponyms, realities, names denoting police and church hierarchy as well as lexems, which require changing the cultural background. The strategy of adding the brief explanation to such words in text was also presented. The author elaborates on the consequences of using so many annotations in the literary text, which seemingly serves to and intensify the feeling of strangeness encountered by the recipients with a different culture backgrond
