This study deals with the activity of the writer and officer Janko Jesenský in Slovak Matica between the years of 1919–1945. His involvement had many dimensions and the study focuses on three primary circuits: impact and activities of Jesenský in local departments of Slovak Matica, particularly in Rimavská Sobota, Nitra and Bratislava, to mediation, vocational skills, funds and contacts with other associations. Further the study brings Jesenský´s literary works published by Slovak Matica. Finally, it points out Jesenský´s efforts for career development within central bodies such as membership in the Committee of Slovak Matica and the administration function of this association. Against the background of these activities, the study clarifies the shapes of horizontal and vertical mobility in the cultural area of Slovakia. At the same time, it tries to point out the complicated relationship between the mostly conservative-orientated Slovak Matica and liberal-attached Janko Jesenský and all differences of ideas between members, employees and functionaries that they endured in this scientific, cultural and educational institution for a long time.
