Site Tăşnad-sere lies on the southern fringe of the northern carpathians. This multi-phase site came under a rescue excavation. more regular archaeological excavation is prevented by the fact that the site lies on plots of land belonging to several private owners. consequently, the only early medieval feature exposed so far is a freestanding pottery kiln which presumably was found on the northern margin of the settlement. Unlike everywhere in the Upper Tisa Valley early slav finds (6th–7th c.) in north-western romania are slightly more frequent — this area bordered on the territory of the gepids and (since 567) that of the Avar Khaganate. The area’s border zone character is visible also in the materials from Tăşnad where we find evidence on connections both with the slav environment and that of the Avar Khaganate. small finds from Tăşnad (early slav phase) comprise only fragments of pottery vessels, of which there is a great quantity. The author proposes to date the archaeological material from Tăşnad to phase ii, possibly phase iib in the chronological system of I. Stanciu (2011), which places the settlement in the final third of the 6th and the first third of the 7 th century, possibly, only in the first third, first half of the 7 th c.
