In the final stages of the wedding customary cycle in the village of Vlachovo (district of Rožňava), an essential component is the so-called wedding khorovod – candle dance. It is a ceremonial dance of the bride, surrounded by married women. It is practiced before removing of the bride’s headdress and the placing of the bridal cap, in the middle of the dancing festivities, around midnight, at the groom’s house. The active participants of the candle dance were, and still are, mainly married women, but also the groomsman, and other men at the wedding. Youth and children were excluded from this occasion. After the wedding celebration moved to a cultural hall, following the year 1971, the course of individual customs related to the wedding customs changed. The aim of the paper is to describe the development and changes of this wedding custom that have occurred during the second half of the 20th century, to present its current state, participants of the ceremony, clarify its functions, symbolism, method, place, and timing within the wedding customary cycle. The study also addresses the most significant socio-cultural factors that have contributed to the evolution of this phenomenon and influenced the current forms of the wedding “chorovod”. The core of the article consists of processed data obtained through qualitative ethnographic research in the village of Vlachovo, using methods of semi-structured and unstructured interviews with respondents, along with participant observation.
