The study is concerned with the establishment of a modern shoe manufacturing plant in the Polish town of Chełmek in the 1930s. The factory used to be a part of the international shoemaking group Baťa. The study first looks at the early years, which were associated with difficulties of building a manufacturing plant in Chełmek, and then goes on to describe the subsequent success of production of the factory on the Polish market, which was stopped only by the German invasion of Poland in 1939. The study further examines the dramatic history of the factory during World War II, as well as its fate in the second half of the 20th century as a nationalised firm, until the ultimate closure of the factory in the early 21st century. The memory of the activities of the firm Baťa in Chełmek is still very much alive.
