This article is aimed at interpreting Boris Pasternak’s work Luvers’s Childhood in the categories of initiation novel. It was demonstrated that the process of physical, emotional and spiritual maturation of Zhenija Luvers – the protagonist of the novel takes place gradually, in accordance with the order determined by the scenario of initiation experiences. The author of this paper distinguishes particular stages and determinants of the heroine’s initiation: menstruation, loneliness, discovering the phenomenon of maternity, as well as opening to the Other. She also indicates other elements present in Pasternak’s work: symbols of initiation expressing the semantics of the initiated person’s rebirth, such as teacher-guide (Negarat), the act of sacrifice and death (Cvetkov’s death), as well as catharsis (the symbolism of the protagonist’s crying/weeping). The problem of sex was also considered, as related to the protagonist’s discovering of her own femininity. For that purpose the utterances of O. Weininger, Z. Gippius and N. Berdiaev were quoted, the reflection of S. de Beauvoir was also referred to, with her understanding of the category of the Other. These considerations allowed for the conclusion that in Pasternak’s writings sex has an axiological character, whereas semantics of the Other is not determined by belonging to a particular sex.
