There is growing body of evidence that several categories, objects of which are possible to be ordered (e.g. numerosity, magnitude, size, days of the week, names of the months, intensity of emotional expression, pitch height) are represented in a similar way. Moreover, they are represented in a reference to the external space outside the body (especially in the left-to-right dimension). The spatial component is genetically determined; nevertheless it partially depends on cultural influences, type of task instruction as well as order of objects in the working memory during the task. In spite of numerous studies, the nature of interindividual variability in spatial associations remains unclear. The role of order of objects in working memory requires further investigation as well. It will cost lot of effort to integrate results of the studies in order to build unitary model of how continua are represented. ATOM (A theory of magnitude) by Walsh seems to be good scaffolding for that model.
