The discourse on for ‘human security’ has shifted from state-centric frameworks to prioritizing the protection of individuals and communities. Within this paradigm, social security emerges as a critical element in addition to resilience and vitality. This necessitates further research into enhancing social security by building on internal human capacities particularly under wartime conditions. This study aims to: (1) define the concept of human social security and its relationship with resilience through a comprehensive literature review and (2) empirically assess the key manifestations and conditions of developing resilience among internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Ukraine as a result of war. The research is based on a social expertise study conducted in 2023, involving 38 experts from key institutions addressing IDP-related issues. A structured questionnaire was used to gather both qualitative and quantitative data. Additionally, the study integrates an extensive review and synthesis of academic sources to provide a conceptual foundation. The findings indicate that the successful integration of IDPs depends on factors such as economic participation, engagement in cultural and sports initiatives, social-psychological adaptation, civic life involvement and political-religious integration. The study also formulates novel definitions of human social security and resilience, emphasizing their interdependence within the broader security context. This study provides a new integrative approach to understanding social security and resilience as well as offering practical insights into addressing the needs of IDPs during war. The article invites academic and policy-making communities to further explore these concepts, fostering collaborative methodologies and evidence-based interventions.
