The Ideological Concepts of Moscow – the Third Rome and Kiev – the Second Jerusalem in a Comparative Analysis

The goal of the article is to present and compare two ideologies: Moscow – the Third Rome and Kiev – the Second Jerusalem. These concepts have played a significant role in both Russian and Ukrainian history and culture. First, the author describes the origin of the idea of Moscow – the Third Rome, and the evolution of this theory, starting from a religious conception to a political doctrine. Second, the author explains the genesis of the ideology of Kiev – the Second Jerusalem. It is also highlighted there is a parallel name to this concept, that is Kiev – Ruthenian Zion. Then, the article outlines the history of this idea with special emphasis on Peter Mohyla's contribution. In the conclusion, the author examines the differences in the way these conceptions changed within years. Despite the fact they both had religious foundations, they progressed dissimilarly.
