The need for filming the wedding customary cycle arose due to the advancement of technology and the proliferation of VCRs in the countryside. The newlyweds suggested filming the event since they wanted to save their wedding day on a VHS tape. The earliest wedding records in the village of Vlachovo date back to the latter part of the 1980s. The research focuses on ensemble groups in the village of Vlachovo (Rožňava district). The central source material of the research are private wedding recordings on VHS media, perceived both as a recording medium and as a cultural phenomenon in rural areas. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the nature and potential of wedding VHS recordings for local instrumental tradition research. The study included fieldwork on multiple VHS tapes, content analysis of the video recordings, and scholarly literature and ethnographic interviews as supplements. The thesis is based on the analysis of VHS tapes, in which it is possible to follow the course of the wedding custom and the activities of the music-instrument groups within it. The recordings contain a wealth of information about the progression of weddings between 1985 and 2003. Through their lens, it is also possible to analyse the many stages of the wedding custom from a musical perspective, observing the forms of ensemble tradition, the playing repertoire, and the forms and extent of the ensembles’ participation in wedding events.
