The article analyses Mary Richmond’s Social Diagnosis published in 1917, recognized internationally as the first textbook of professional social work, currently constituting a classic in that discipline. The considerations presented in the study focus on the issues discussed a hundred years ago in the publiW stulecie wydania „Diagnozy Społecznej” Mary Ellen Richmond… s Praca Socjalna nr 6(32) 2017, . 5–25 25 cation, related to social work and the tasks encountered in the professional approach to social assistance. In the wider context, the 100th anniversary of the publication of Social Diagnosis encourages reflection over changes that have taken place within the social sciences in relation to contemporary possibilities of recognizing the social situation of people threatened with exclusion.
