Today ideal of beauty associated with the cult of the body is promoted by the media. Th e way the man l ooks more and more oft en determines his or her value. Perception and evaluation of one’s own body aff ect human behavior and self-esteem. What is important however is not how the person really looks but how a given person perceives it. Th e existing discrepancy between the real and the imaginary image of oneself contributes to the increasing creation of one’s appearance. Th is applies especially to people with low self-esteem. Extremely low self-esteem is a predisposing factor for emotional problems and disorders. Over time, these conditions may take the form of substance abuse or nonsubstance (behavioral) abuseinvolving the loss of control over certain activities or behaviors – these types of disorders include: anorexia, drunkorexia, permarexia, bulimia, bigorexia and tanning addiction. Characteristic features for all of these disordersare: a dissatisfaction with one’s body, a lack of acceptance of own appearance and a strong focus on the appearanceas well asan obsessive pursuit of the ideal – unattainable look. Th ese disorders have a signifi cant impact on reducing the effi ciency of functioning of a young man. As a consequence thereappearsa sense of loneliness and focusing on one’s own problem which is a disordered, distorted self-image.
