Hearing loss (hypoacusia) is one of the many reasons that may have a signifi cant impact on children equal start in adult life. Until recently, the problem of hearing loss in the society was little known and hardly noticed. Th e fi rst step in equalizing educational opportunities for children is to diagnose hearing loss as early as possible. Important indicators that will help us understand the dysfunction and bring a lot of information about the extent of hearing loss are inter alia: etiology, depth and the period in which hypoacusia was made. Child hypoacusia causes communication diffi culties, largely aff ects the educational progress and changes in behavior with children of the same age, school and home environment. Th ese symptoms should be noticed by parents and teachers, but not always guardians’ vigilance is suffi cient. In order to improve this situation were initiated hearing screening programs. Th e fi rst hearing tests covering a large part of the population of infants in Poland were implemented in 2001. However, these tests have not covered children born earlier, hence a signifi cant part of children has not been diagnosed in infancy. Further screening programs were intended for school children. At the same time knowledge about screening tests, capabilities for diagnosis and treatment of hearing disorders was disseminated. Th e fi rst three-year program of basic hearing screening was conducted in 2008-2010 by the Institute of Physiology and Pathology of Hearing on behalf of the City of Warsaw (Th e research program for students of Classes I and VI of primary school in the City Warsaw), another took place in the years 2011 to 2013. Th e project was supported by the Masovian Board of Education and the Polish Scientifi c Society of Hearing Voice and Language Communication Disorders. Another initiative was hearing screening program of school-age children from rural areas. From 2008 to 2011, institute researchers conducted hearing tests among children from rural areas of eastern and western Poland covering all provinces of our country. Th e initiative was supported by the Agricultural Social Insurance Fund and the Association of Friends of the Deaf and Hearing Impaired “a Man to Man”. Parents of children with hearing loss identifi ed during screening, received a letter with information about a suspicion of hearing loss, and guidance where they could register in order to enhance the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. Th e school, the child with a hearing loss attends, should also be informed. Local governments under the Ordinance of the Minister of National Education are to provide places for teaching children with hypoacusia in appropriate educational institutions which can also off er them extra curricular activities. Working with students with hearing loss requires greater eff ort from the teacher, knowledge of dysfunction, and skills to lead the educational process of the child with special needs. It is important that all the described stages of dealing with children with hearing loss have enabled to equalize their educational opportunities.
