The authors aimed to investigate whether individuals’ sexual orientation determined selected aspects (especially emotional) of patients’ attitudes towards their disease. The assumption was that heterosexual syphilis cases would and it more di:cult to deal with their emotions than homosexual syphilis patients. The investigation tools comprised of a combination of medical history and an additional questionnaire about psychosocial aspects. The study group included 26 syphilis patients (23 men and 3 women) hospitalized atthe Dermatology Clinic, Poznan University of Medical Sciences, between September 2011 and mid-July 2012. The female participants were all heterosexual; 2 of them were 12 and 15 weeks pregnant on the day of the interview. There were 11 homosexuals, 2 bisexuals and 10 heterosexuals among the male subjects.
