Paweł Możdżyński presents four symbolic contexts in which the cross appears in the Polish visual arts in the years 1945–2010. They are: 1) Abreaction of the war trauma, the expression of the experience of absurdity; 2) The experience of transcendence and the formal exploration in art; 3) National tradition; 4) Transgression and subversivity. The author points to the different social conditions (political, economic and religious) of Polish art. In the text there are many references to pieces and trends in contemporary visual art.
