The title of European Capital of Culture is an opportunity for a city to show its national and cultural uniqueness. Acquisition of this European title positively influences the cultural life of a city. As well as that, it guaranties growing popularity among citizens of Europe and positively influences tourism attendance. However, the realization of such enormous project brings not only glory but difficult challenges as well, which may not always be met by project organizers. Research shows, that main factors determining the success of European Capital of Culture are: finances (scheduled and real budget for the project and events), promotion and public relations analysis. Final results are influenced by good organization as well as innovative program. Positive media attitude and affirmative local citizens opinions are additional success factors. Vilnius is the first of new European Union members, who received this honor. Regardless of a good start, Lithuania failed to avoid problems which had negative impact on the final results. But despite all the difficulties, Vilnius has gained experience that will certainly be applied in other future projects.
