This article presents the selected threads of research on the patron of pilgrims – St. James the Elder, Apostle as well as the synthetic state of research of the Polish historiography on this subject. Due to the complexity of the problem we focused on some issues which, as I believe, will allow all those who deal with the theory and organization of tourism to develop tourism products based on the extended historical knowledge about St. James and pilgrimages to his grave in Santiago de Compostela. The “St. James Way” called analogically to the “Cistercian Way” allows namely to unite the European nations and countries in cultivating and deepening their knowledge of the common roots of our cultural identity.
