This paper discusses one of the most prominent Polish sociologists: Stanislaw Ossowski. It examines one of the main topics of his work: the evolution of his thinking on art andculture, which is explored from a historiographic perspective. Ossowski began his career as a philosopher – esthetician, before gradually turning to the social aspects of art, which eventually resulted in him abandoning philosophy for sociology (including the sociology of culture). This article is a reflection on the evolution of his ideas, and also presents a review of his works on the sociology of art and culture. The paper explores his ideas on Polish post-war sociology, which had a relatively small impact for the following reasons. Firstly, this limited impact was influenced by political sanctions that were placed against “the rebelliously thinking professor”. Secondly, Polish sociology of culture turned to a new model, based on research into participation in culture, which resulted from the political needs of the young socialist state.
