In the autumn of 2012 the Via Nova publishing house in Wrocław issued the guidebook: Muzea Wrocławia, encompassing 26 museums and centres collecting and displaying works of art as well as other valuables, part of the cultural landscape of contemporary Wrocław. From the editorial viewpoint this is an album with numerous photographs of museums, works of art and treasures of Nature. The publication was written upon the initiative of the Wrocław Branch of the Society of Historians of Art, which perceived the need for a new portrayal of this particular domain of material and spiritual culture comprised by the museums of Wrocław. The following guidebooks appeared during the post-World War II period: Muzea Wrocławskie. Przewodnik, edited by Maria Starzewska and issued by Ossolineum in 1973, Muzea Wrocławskie od 1814 roku by Adam Więcek,published by Wydawnictwo Miłośników Wrocławia WRATISLAVIA in 1997, Muzea Wrocławia/ Museen in Breslau, issued by Studio Wydawnicze Plan in 2005 and, finally, the discussed publication written by a team of eight authors under Beata Lejman. The idea of the publication won the wide approval and support of the heads of Wrocław museums as well as their staff. The comprehensive value of the book for the culture of the town was appreciated by the authorities of Wrocław, who additionally financed the undertaking. Muzea Wrocławia expands knowledge about the history of the municipal museums against the background of the history of the life of the local residents, their tastes, ambitions and passions ... both past and contemporary. This is also a story about exceptional objects and places, with which the museums of Wrocław abound and for whose sake it is certainly worth coming from all over the world. Readers wishing to multiply their knowledge are provided with a list of selected reading. The guidebook contains practical information about the addresses of the museums, telephone numbers, virtual sites and Internet addresses, as well as opening hours and available assorted services and facilities. The album also includes a plan of the town featuring characteristic icons of the museums, making it easier to find them. The guidebook is published in two congress languages - English and German, of importance also in global and Central European tourism.
