The western Turks had ten tribes. These ten tribes, called the Ten Arrows (on oq) were not their original tribal system. According to Menandros Protector Turxanthos, the leader who threatened Valentinos with execution was the leader of one of the eight branches of the Turks. Our paper deals with the process how the ten tribes came to exist of these original eight ones.
