Mirza Ghalib is one of the most outstanding Urdu poets who, though being an eye-witness of the decline of the Mughal realm, was clinging fast to the old literary tradition. While considering himself rather a Persian than an Urdu poet and writing more profusely in that language, he remains nonetheless famous for his work in Urdu which, though very small in volume, offers a unique and intricate elaboration of many traditional poetic motives long cherished both in India and Persia.
