This paper presents the quantitative results of a doctor research project based on an empirical study of 'SAPARD' applications submitted to the Lodz Regional Office of the Agency for Restructuring and Modernizing of Agriculture. The sample consisted of 34 applications of food processing enterprises that decided to take part in the programme during the first year of its implementation. The collected data were subject to statistical analysis. Meat processors predominated in the sample. The beneficiaries operated under the different organizational and legal settings. The average value of proposed investment amounted to 4 million zlotys, whereas the subsidy covered around 40% of their total costs. The number of employees in the enterprises under study was expected to grow from 160 to 169 due to SAPARD projects after completing the investment. The expected increase in labour productivity was even more impressive. It turned out that SAPARD had a positive impact on the backward contractual market channel integration in the agri-food sector and it contributed to the development of export orientation of firms under study. It was an important incentive for entrepreneurship in the rural areas.
