One of the themes in 'Maha-bharata' is the story of the abduction of Subhadra, Krsna's sister, by Arjuna. This topic was taken up in 'Bhagavata-purana' and then it became the favourite story in Bengali literature. The narration of Subhadra's abduction has undergone numerous transformations over two thousand years. In 'Maha-bharata', Krsna's speech of defence comes to the foreground, justifying the right of the Ksatriyas to the marriage of abduction. Sanskrit 'Bhagavata' emphasises the political signifance of this marital union. Bengali epic broadly develops the theme of the female scheme, which is not the abduction of Subhadra but rather the seduction of Arjuna by the girl. Developed by Bengali poets, the rather short story grew larger, changed, was enriched with additional strands, explanations or plots, in result of which Subhadra became the main character of the epic
