The article discusses the issue of the influence the global economic crisis exercised on the internal situation and international position of the Russian Federation. It displays the process of growth and accumulation of negative effects of the crisis on the Russian economy, including a slump at the Russian stock-exchange, outflow of foreign capital, and - what is even worse - a decrease in all the world prices of raw materials and its impact on the drop in the Russian budget incomes. Against the background of the negative economic consequences, the author analyzes social outcomes of the crisis which strike the image of the authorities built by Vladimir Putin as a stabilizing factor providing the Russian Federation with international prestige and undermine a specific Russian consensus which makes the public refrain from interference in politics at the price of the increasing level of citizens' earnings. On the basis of economic and social consequences of the global economic crisis, the article shows the reactions and policy of the Russian governing camp, including the activities undertaken to stop the drop in the income of the state, to control spontaneous social reactions and to limit the losses in the image of the political elite. The material also refers to the influence of the crisis on the dynamics of foreign policy of the Russian Federation, including its relations with the USA, Europe, China and countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States region.
