The aim of this paper is to show the semantic range of the word 'ártha' in the 'Rg-veda' on the basis of its usages, of analysis of its specific contexts (similes and epithets) and of its negation. The analysis shows a very wide semantic range of this word which includes not only the meaning of destination, purpose, occupation, task and benefit, but also the meaning of life and life-multiplying factors such as wealth, food, fertility, offspring. In its largest semantic range 'ártha' refers to the cosmos conceived as a dynamic whole. The analysis shows that in the 'Rg-veda' 'ártha' is a general ontological and ethical notion and that the roots for its later understanding are already there.
