Despite the fact that the history of museum studies in Dabrowa Górnicza is almost a hundred years old, the 'Sztygarka' Municipal Museum is one of the few institutions of its sort in the Dabrowa Basin. The local museum traditions in 'Sztygar' date back to the end of the nineteenth century and are closely connected with the Mining Academy, whose resources included a mineralogical and geological collection. The Academy attracted numerous outstanding persons fascinated in regional history and avid collectors concerned with establishing a museum in Dabrowa. In 1912 the first Zygmunt Gloger Museum was opened to the public at the local Club; its patron was an eminent ethnographer and expert on culture. In 1919 a Mineralogical-Geological Museum was established in a building which housed the Mining Academy, erected in 1839-1842 by the acclaimed architect Franciszek Maria Lanci. Its continuation is the present-day 'Sztygarka' Municipal Museum, with more than ten showrooms displaying permanent exhibitions: archaeological, natural sciences, historical, ethnographic and travels. In addition, the museum has its own Training Mine - Drift, and holds temporary shows, e. g. of photographs and works by more or less celebrated artists. As a rule, the exhibitions are on loan from other cultural institutions. Each of the Museum departments conducts lectures and interactive courses for interested visitors; they also organise expositions in those cultural institutions of the town and region with which the Museum maintains close contacts As a rule, Dabrowa Górnicza is associated with industry and, predominantly, mining. Today, however, the town is also one of the cultural centres of the Dabrowa Basin. Thanks to such institutions as the 'Sztygarka' Municipal Museum, the Basin Palace of Culture, and the Municipal Public Library, the visitor may become acquainted with the history of the region and the town's extensive cultural offer.
