During work on the new shape of agricultural policy the problem surfaced again how to define rural community and rural development. A discussion is now under way on the directions of development of rural community and rural areas. This makes it necessary to ask who participates and who should participate in the ongoing discussion. The authoress of the article asked rural leaders for their opinion about the most desirable directions of the rural community's development. She also asked them about their attitude towards various EU proposals of changes in rural areas. It turned out that rural leaders favour the vision of a farming rural community. They also believe that it is worth investing in infrastructure, IT infrastructure included. In twenty years from now they would like to be able to describe their local home-lands as prosperous, beautiful and active.
