Príkra, the smallest village in Slovakia, is celebrating its 450th anniversary this year. This paper concentrates on what the onymy says about the life in the village. The motivation of its very name says that it is related to the rugged mountainous surface of the village territory (príkry – a steep, precipitous, abrupt slope, hill, a steep hillside, a mountain – that is a settlement under the steep mountain). Since its origin, the inhabitants of the village have lived by shepherding, agriculture and forestry, as territorial names known up to present times prove. The core of the paper lies in the analysis of nicknames and surnames. During a 450 years’ period, we notice 106 surnames – 55.54% from apellatives and 42.46% from proper names. The conclusion says that the village has been being depopulated, since only 5 inhabitants live there at present.
