W drugiej dekadzie XXI wieku nasiliła się rywalizacja pomiędzy Chinami i Japonią oraz Stanami Zjednoczonymi i Chinami w regionie Azji Wschodniej. Japonia intensywnie rozbudowuje swoje Narodowe Sił Samoobrony i przekształca je, przy poparciu ze strony USA, w nowoczesną armię wyposażoną w broń ofensywną. Upatruje w tym, a nie tylko w sojuszu z USA, główną szansę obrony swojego terytorium przed ekspansją Chin, które od kilku lat domagają się zwrotu wysp Senkaku/Diaoyutai. Z kolei Chiny dążą nie tylko do umocnienia swojej dominującej pozycji w regionie Azji Wschodniej, lecz także do uzyskania statusu supermocarstwa . W tym celu rozbudowują w niespotykanym dotychczas tempie i skali swój potencjał militarny. Potencjał ten może zostać, w najbliższej przyszłości, użyty dla odbicia spornych wysp na Morzu Południowochińskim.

In the second decade of XXI century there has been an increase in rivalry both between China and Japan as well as between China and the United States. This, in turn, has led in Japan to the buildup of National Self-defence Force and transformation of that force, with the support of the U.S., into the modern army equipped with the offensive weapons. Asserting the right to self-defence of its territory against the Chinese expansion could worsen Japan,s relations with China, which tries to regain the Senkaku Islands being the part of the Japan, s territory since 1895. On the other hand China aims not only at the consolidation of its position in East Asia but also at gaining the status of superpower. Therefore the Middle Kingdom develops its military potential at the unprecedented rate and scale .And that potential may be used, in the near future, in order to conquer the Senkaku and other islands on the East China Sea.
