The collections of the military history started to be regularly stored after the WW2, when the History Department in the Museum’s organizational structure was created. Previously, a small collection of various objects illustrating the siege of Grudziądz by the Napoleonic armies in 1807 was associated with the military theme. In the 1960s new objects connected with the activity of the interwar garrison, such as badges and commemorative badge certificates, military booklets, military award certificates, officer commission certificates, etc., were added to the collection; also gun collections were increased (mainly through purchases). Moreover, the Department’s collection was enriched with uniforms of the interwar period, which had been provided by the army. There was also added a brand new branch – the so-called “cavalry collection” – consisting of various objects connected with the activity of the Cavalry Training Centre and the pre-war cavalry regiments, donated by former cavalrymen and their families via the Foundation for the Tradition of Polish Cavalry in Grudziądz established in 1991. Each year the Museum welcomes participants of the Congress of Cavalrymen of the Second Polish Republic, presenting exhibitions on this occasion. The Museum’s activities in this area had a significant impact on the decision of Anna Wyrwińska to hand over a rich collection of very precious objects connected to the cavalry in August 2013, namely sabers, regimental badges, cavalrymen’s souvenirs, paintings, etc. These items had been collected by Aleksander Wyrwiński. Summing up, the collections related to the military history stored in Władysław Łęga Museum in Grudziądz may be divided into the following sections: 1. photographs, illustrating military architecture, the activities of the Grudziądz garrison and various cavalry regiments; 2. archival documents – mainly loose documents; 3. cartographic documents – town plans, military maps; 4. militaria – transregional section including weapons, uniforms and military equipment mainly of the Second Polish Republic, but also earlier; 5. souvenirs; 6. a small collection of paintings related to the theme.
