W artykule dokonuje się analizy powieści Hannsa Heinza Ewersa „Alraune. Historia pewnej żyjącej istoty”, wydanej po raz pierwszy w Niemczech w 1911 roku, a przetłumaczonej na polski kilkukrotnie, m.in. przez Jadwigę Przybyszewską w 1917 roku i Barbarę Grunwald-Hajdasz w 2024 roku. Niemalże od początku książce towarzyszyły zarówno atmosfera skandalu, jak i ogromna popularność, a przy tym skrajnie różne opinie. Dzisiaj podczas lektury polskiej edycji, opublikowanej po ponad 100 latach od pierwodruku, uwidaczniają się rozmaite konteksty kulturowe utworu, jakie czynią go wciąż aktualnym, wskazujące nowe sposoby odczytu możliwe do realizacji dzięki współczesnym metodologiom. Jak się wydaje, „Alraune” jest doskonałym materiałem do rozważań z kręgu badań feministycznych, ekofeministycznych, gender, queer, a także poruszających zagadnienia posthumanizmu.

The article analyses the novel “Alraune. Die Geschichte eines lebenden Wesens“ („Alraune. The Story of a Living Being”) by Hanns Heinz Ewers, first published in Germany in 1911 and translated into Polish multiple timesby, inter alia, Jadwiga Przybyszewska in 1917 and Barbara Grunwald-Hajdasz in 2024. From the very beginning, Ewers’s “Alraune” was accompanied by an atmosphere of scandal as well as immense popularity, eliciting sharply divided opinions. Presently, when reading the Polish edition published over a century after the original release, various cultural contexts of the work become apparent, demonstrating its enduring relevance and highlighting new interpretative possibilities afforded by contemporary methodologies. As it turns out, “Alraune” provides an excellent foundation for explorations within the realms of feminist, ecofeminist, gender, and queer studies, as well as inquiries into posthumanist themes.
