The early mediaeval castle complex situated on Lednica Island has been the subject of extensive investigations; recently, they have been intensified due to work carried out by an Interdisciplinary Team for Research on Lednica Island and Its Hinterland Settlement. These investigations, combined with the verification of earlier work connected with the site, have led to the following conclusions: 1. the settlement phases on the island correlate with its stratigraphie disposition and chronology; 2. a new approach is adopted as regards the spatial programme and the function of the palatial-sacral complex together with the so-called church II and its inner and outside necropolis; 3- the inner topography of the residence and the infrastructure of the island (bridges, roads etc.) have been established; 4. settlement zones in the hinterland of the castle and changes which occurred at that time in particular settlements connected with the management of the residence, have been ascertained; 5. a link has been found between assorted aspects of material culture, mainly sacral and military objects and luxury articles, and the occupants of the Lednica residence (the princeps, his court, knights and clergy); 6. the insular cult centre fulfilled religious functions such as the baptism of the sovereign, and served as the necropolis of the Piast dynasty.
