An international symposium on „The Conservation o f Relics o f Mediaeval Monumental Architecture” was held in Poland on 24-26May 1995 upon the initiative o f the Polish ICOM National Committee, the Society fo r the Protection o f Historical Monuments and the Museum o f the First Piasts in Lednica; the meeting benefited from tbe financial support o f the Ministry o f Culture and Art. The organisers o f the symposium planned to present and discuss newest achievements in the realm o f securing and conserving mediaeval buildings and monuments o f historical and archeological ment, particularly those which are situated in localities o f considerable cultural importance such as Cracow, Warsaw and Greater Poland. The symposium, which was held in the Royal Castle in Warsaw, attracted several score specialists — conservators, mediaevalists, historians o f art, architects, archeologists and technologists. The debates concentrated on five basic issues: 1. the historical an d fu nctional aspects o f the conservation o f relics o f mediaeval monumental architecture, 2. the display o f historical monuments inside and outside buildings as well as on sheltered sites, 3. analytical research into the damage o f stone material and their complex conservation, 4. the securing o f stone relics as well as the ethics o f reconstruction, 5. a policy o f protecting relics o f mediaeval architecture conceived as part o f the cultural landscape. A detailed programme o f the symposium was prepared by a group o f scientists an d experts headed by professro Aleksander Gieysztor, the initiator o f the international meeting. The participants enjoyed the opportunity o f becoming acquainted with the mediaeval architecture o f Warsaw a n d Poznań, Lednica, Giecz, Gniezno, Strzelno an d Konin, which were included in the tour. A visit to Cracow and Wieliczka was a special part o f the programme; the invited scholars were able to examine the Romanesque and Gothic elements o f the historical complex o f the Wawel Royal Castle and the Cracow Main Market Square as well as the mediaeval salt mine in Wieliczka. Owing to the fa c t that the programme o f the symposium met with vast interest among conservators, scholars and managers o f objects dating from the Middle Ages, and that the material prepared fo r the session was published in English in the form o f a preprint, the editors o f „Ochrona Zabytkow” decided to present the Polish version o f the papers together with a summary o f the debates and a detailed report from the trip. All the papers from the symposium are made available to our readers thanks to the kind agreement expressed by the authors. It gives us particular pleasure tofeature this material considering that the most recent years have witnessed a growing interest in the protection an d conservation o f mediaeval monumental architecture as well as wide ranging investigations which support assorted conservation undertakings in various parts o f the world, including Poland.
