The article presents the achievements of a dozen or so amateur and professional scholars working in the first half of the 19th century in various disciplines of history, scholars whose research interests included broadly defined Ukrainian themes. Among them were distinguished political figures like Joachim Lelewel as well as people who chose the Ukrainian nationality, a decision that led to conflicts with their Polish milieu. The scholars in question were active in regions belonging to pre-partition Poland, in Russia, and abroad where they emigrated following the fall of the November Uprising. Their oeuvres, often directly or indirectly influenced by the uprising, provoked disputes and polemics.
