Animals are a subject of interest of classical cultural anthropology as part of natural human environment. As such, they are perceived in categories of culture, which, on the one hand, are adaptation to natural conditions, on the other hand ordering system of symbols. On the side of the definition of specific character of humanity, cultural anthropologists undertook the reflection on the subjectivity of animals. Contemporary cultural anthropology, which draws inspirations e.g. from natural science, redefines a place of a human in the natural environment, however does not abolish the boundary between human and non-human animals.
