Jezus, przebywając na pustyni, pości przez czterdzieści dni i nocy, a od swoich wyznawców oczekuje, aby w czasie postu zachowali radość. Szczególnym momentem dla nich będzie ten czas, gdy „pana młodego” – Jezusa – nie będzie z nimi. W pierwotnym zaś Kościele praktyka postu stała się swoistym narzędziem przygotowania do podejmowania decyzji ważnych dla Kościoła. Za tą postawą chrześcijanina naznaczoną postem stało pragnienie zyskania jasności umysłu i serca, które charakteryzują człowieka dojrzałego i gotowego do służby wspólnocie, a zatem zdrowego, odpowiedzialnego i pełnego mądrości stylu życia.

Jesus, fasting in the desert, fasts for forty days and nights, and expects of his followers to keep their joy during fasting. A special moment for them will be the time when “bridegroom” – Jesus will not be with them. In the Church of the first centuries, the practice of fasting became a specific tool for preparing decisions important for the Church. Behind this attitude of a Christian marked by fasting, he has become a desire to gain clarity of mind and heart that characterizes a mature and ready-to-serve community, and therefore a healthy, responsible and full of wisdom lifestyle.
