This paper discusses individual factors which hinder the success in learning a foreign language. Analysis of the problem was madę based on a questionnaire survey carried out among neophilology students of the University of Szczecin. Specific predispositions (personalny, cognitive and motivational ones) were selected, as well as the behaviours related to overcoming difficulties which may be conducive to glottodidactic failure. It was demonstrated that success is not favoured by the following: introverted personality traits of student, use of so called containment strategy by students, instrumental (external) motives for learning, and surrendering to negative emotional states during study.
