The article deals with different variations of folk music characteristic of contemporary Belarus – authentic folk and its different interpretations (including medieval folk), post -folk, ambient, folk and pagan metal, folk -rock. These styles and their place in the country’s musical landscape is clearly defined and described in detail. Music is presented as an active force, changing the existing cultural reality, as well as having the potential to influence social and political realms as well. As is clearly seen in the article, folk music can stand in radical opposition to the modern world, as well as be inspired by the globalization of culture – and benefit from it. Presented here is also the unique conflict between the propagators of Balto -Belarusian (Crivian) and Slavic identities, part of whom use folk music as means of spreading their ideas.
