When Friedrich Hölderlin was writing "Hälfte des Lebens" (1804, ang. Half of Life), he was 34 years old and had achieved the real midst of his life. In his poem Hölderlin, confronted with the past and the future he is for, describes a sort of middle-age crisis. However, the issue of ‘midlife crisis’ refer to a specifi c lifestyle, that is an artist’s and poet’s life. The crisis is visible not only in the contents of Hälfte des Lebens, but also in its form; the latter has a metre and a rhythm, that seem to be derived from antiquity. On the one hand, the poet affi rms the surrounding nature, from which he draws his inspiration, on the other – he sees its devaluation, that is the signal of the approaching end. The poet, in order to pull himself out from the crisis, has to become its manager. Thanks to the managerial activity, through the ability to regulate, by means of his literary genius, the poetic crisis, there is a potentiality to overcome the diffi cult phase of the artistic life. ‘Poeta doctus’ is not standing by, he fi ghts with the ‘midlife crisis’ by using both the word and the silence, where the latter in fact gets verbalized. As a matter of fact, it is the balance between poetic ecstasy and poetic clear, ‘sober enthusiasm’ (‘sobria ebrietas’), that exemplify, for the poet-Hölderlin, a chance to further creation and writing, despite the middle-age crisis.

Kiedy Friedrich Hölderlin pisał "Hälfte des Lebens" (1804, pol. Połowa życia), miał 34 lata i osiągnął prawdziwy środek życia. W swoim wierszu Hölderlin, skonfrontowany z przeszłością i czekającą przyszłością, opisuje swego rodzaju kryzys wieku średniego.
