The archaeological surveys and supervisions conducted in the Old Town of Grudziądz brought about a number of new sources that allow us to confront the former findings of historians and urbanists, and develop and complement our knowledge of the oldest medieval structures of the town. The settlement processes in the Old Town of Grudziądz were proceeding unevenly. The northwestern area (ul. Starorynkowa/Długa/Murowa) was settled at the earliest, in the fourth quarter of the 13th century, before the foundation of the town in 1291. The traces of settlement in the area between Spichrzowa/Pańska/Wodna/Poprzeczna indicate that the territory was settled probably in the second half of the 14th century. Such a conclusion can be drawn on the basis of the analysis of the ceramic material gathered from the object registered at Starorynkowa/Długa/Murowa. The material has been dated back to the fourth quarter of the 13th and the first half of the 14th c. The younger material from the area between Spichrzowa/Pańska/Wodna/Poprzeczna allows us to make a statement that the settlement should rather be dated back to the second half of the 14th c. There were no visible stylistic or technological differences in the ceramic material excavated from ul. Murowa 23, 27, Szewska 13, Poprzeczna and the territory of the Museum. This material probably comes from the 14–15th c. However, such chronological strati-fication of settlement processes neither confirms the thesis on few stages of urbanization, nor the earliest settlement in the southern area of the town (13th c.). As previously, we can state that there were few stages of the settlement process, but within the already delineated town borders (1291). It was the northern part, near the former (before the foundation privilege) trade settlement, that was settled first. Nearby, at ul. Starorynkowa/Długa/Murowa there were some other forms of settlement. However, we cannot state whether they linked with the trade settlement or the chartered town. Afterwards, with the increase of population or arrival of new settlers, the centre and the southern part of the town were settled, and the former buildings, such as hospital and cemetery, were removed. The issue of the date of establishment of the Church of the Holy Spirit and hospital is still debatable, as the written sources indicate that they come from the 13th century, whereas the archaeological findings (fragments of vessels) – 14th c. Probably further research will help to resolve certain issues, which are only indicated in this article.
